The article welcomes the move of handing over the Satyam Case to CBI from the hands of AP State Police Department who were taking the case with light hands. The article also expects SEBI and SFIO to cooperate with CBI in filing a comprehensive charge sheet and bring the culprits to justice.
Handing over the case to CBI would ensure the investigation to be fair and thorough. AP CID created many roadblocks for SEBI and SFIO (Special Fraud Investigation Office) to interrogate Raju brothers before Supreme Court intervened. The time lost (40 days since Raju confessed about the fraud) in handing over the case to CBI could prove crucial. Such cases should at once go to the economic offences wing of CBI and should be investigated by the same until a more legally empowered body like SFIO intervenes.
Right now the prime duty of SEBI and SFIO should be to help CBI to the maximum possible extent to file a comprehensive charge sheet against Raju brothers. As SEBI investigates the case in context of insider trading which is a criminal offense and SFIO investigating the case under Companies Act 1956, inputs from both the bodies to the CBI charge sheet could prove very useful to ensure guilty is punished properly for his crimes.
The article contemplates over the recent peace deal between Pakistan and TTP (Tehreek e Taliban Pakistan) that allowed TTP to establish Islamic laws in the Swat valley. The author believes the deal can boomerang on Pakistan and poses a serious threat to the democracy in the entire country.
The deal is like a pact with devil which will do nothing but empower TTP to take over the entire nation under its grip. The nature of Pakistan’s polity is at stake and it also questions Pakistan’s military’s commitment to fight against terrorism. To add to that is withered public opinion in Pakistan that denies Talibanization as a direct threat to the country. The failure of judiciary has prompted the public to give Taliban laws a try. Even Punjab is falling for tribal mode of politics and eliminating local state mechanisms.
Sharia laws have been an issue in Pakistan since long and now with this deal it is difficult to contain the pro-sharia forces. Unfortunately Pakistan has failed to realize that there is no substitute to effective governance and inclusive democracy. This is becoming a great danger that the failure in the Frontier may lead to consequences in the heartland Pakistan.
